And the winner is……San Antonio!!!!
San Antonio girl’s basketball stand up! That is exactly what the girls basketball community of San Antonio did this past weekend. From Friday night to Sunday evening, San Antonio was the hot spot for girl’s basketball.
Friday night kicked off the exciting weekend when over 10,000 screaming fans attended the Silver Stars vs Sparks game. The starting lineup introductions showed that San Antonians respect and appreciate Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker but came out to watch the Stars beat their Western Conference foes. The atmosphere was electric and something rarely seen in a WNBA game. Local AAU teams like Shertz Jaguars, SA Finest, SA Starz, Ballerz, NS Mustags, Lady Ballers, all had at least a few of their girls in the house. Numerous luxury boxes were occupied by these rambunctious girls including the Magi Real Estate and Time Warner suites where popcorn and cheers were plentiful. Local players from high school teams representing Wagner, Judson, Reagan, Fox Tech, Cole were there to have a ball. Judson Coach Pam Owens was seen sporting her Tennessee coaching shirt. Was she supporting the Sparks’s Candace Parker and Shannon Bobbit or the Stars Shanna Crossley? Only she can tell you that but the look on her face as she mingled with young basketball loving girls was worth a thousand words.
Saturday included quality tournaments held by Tom Brown and YBOA and the Lady Rohawks Lady first event but the annual UTSA camp was refreshing.
Coach Blair hosted a bevy of young ball players from as far away as Colorado and Oklahoma. Blair wore her “We are going dancing” shirt that celebrated UTSA’s success in 2008 and the schools first appearance in the NCAA tournament.
The Team Camp was kicked off with a very inspirational speech from Silver Stars player Shanna Crossley. The participating teams were playing in shortened games that UTSA players were refereeing. The high school division showed teams with surprising execution and quality skilled players. The middle school division was exciting as UTSA star and All -Conference selection Monica Gibbs played in two vs two battles with wide eyed middle school players between games. The outgoing Gibbs was a magnet for the young girls as she encouraged them through her confidence. Local team SA Mustangs won the middle school division over SA Finest in a great reminder of the talent that is being nurtured in San Antonio. Former Austin Standout and current UTSA guard Amber Gregg took vocal jabs from excitable coaches and seemed to enjoy refereeing girls that surely reminded her of those days when she was working to get a Division 1 school.
Gregg posed for pictures with various players and concluded sessions with high fives that truly meant something to the young girls. With such a great group of coaches and numerous key players returning, UTSA has a terrific shot at “Dancing Again”.
Sunday was capped off with the Clash of the Titans. The Lady Rohawks Lady First event brought over 60 teams to San Antonio to watch the top two San Antonio based teams clash in a game that resembled a civil war. More on that battle in the ClubTeams Section…..
